Double Olympic Champion Laura Dahlmeier Missing After Serious Mountaineering Accident

Laura Dahlmeier, the two-time Olympic biathlon champion from Germany, is currently missing following a severe mountaineering accident in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range. Reports say the 32-year-old star was struck by falling rocks while climbing at an altitude of about 18,700 feet on Monday. Rescue teams have been unable to reach her so far, and the search was paused on Tuesday due to nightfall.

Her management told German news outlet ZDF that Laura was climbing in alpine style with a partner on July 28 when the accident happened around noon local time. After the rockfall struck, her climbing partner quickly called for emergency help, and rescue efforts began immediately.

The Karakoram Mountains, located in the Kashmir region, are known for their dangerous terrain. On Tuesday, helicopters flew over the area but did not spot any signs of Laura. Local officials said that the search would resume on Wednesday morning.

Laura Dahlmeier retired from professional biathlon in 2019 at just 25 years old. She made history as the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit gold medals at the same Olympic Games.

This story is still unfolding. Our thoughts are with Laura and her family as we hope for her safe return.
