Two Australian friends, Eduard Nitz and Cacey Dean, claim to possess the oldest McDonald’s burger in existence, and they recently shared what their ‘Senior Burger’ looks like nearly three decades after they got it. The story began back in 1995 when they were just 14 years old. During a night out, one of their friends ordered too much food at a McDonald’s in Adelaide and couldn’t finish his Quarter Pounder. He asked Eduard to keep the burger safe until his next visit — which never happened.
True to his word, Eduard kept the burger first on his desk, then stored it carefully in a special box that has passed among family members since 1995. Surprisingly, the burger shows no signs of mold. According to the pair, it’s “too old for mold.” They say they haven’t done anything to preserve it; it has simply hardened with age and lost its softness and juiciness. In fact, they bounced the burger off the keepsake box to prove how rock hard it has become.
The Senior Burger gained viral attention about ten years ago after Nitz and Dean set up a Facebook page challenging it to get more likes than Kanye West. Their page exploded in popularity, leading to fan art, a Spotify single, and plans for an entire album. They are even developing an AI chatbot so fans can “talk” to the old burger like a therapist, a playful project inspired by their neighbor who is into AI.
Though Reddit users have joked about the burger’s preservation, nutritionists explain that the high salt content in McDonald’s food helps prevent spoilage. The friends also confirmed McDonald’s is aware of their burger whenever media covers the story.
