Spanish actress Ana Obregón captured hearts in 2023 when she chose to fulfill her late son Aless Lequio’s wish to become a father. Aless tragically died from cancer in 2022 at the young age of 27. Following his death, Ana revealed that he had hoped to have children, and she was determined to make that dream come true—even after he was gone.
About a year after Aless’s passing, Ana welcomed a baby girl via surrogacy in the United States. Clarifying the family relationship, she explained that the child, named Anita, is her granddaughter—conceived using sperm preserved from Aless. “This girl is not my daughter, she is my granddaughter,” Ana shared. “I will tell her one day about her father’s heroism, so she knows who he was and can be proud of him.”
Now 70 years old, Ana spoke openly on Spanish television about the bittersweet joy of raising Anita while continuing to cope with her profound loss. Her home is filled with the laughter and play of a small child, yet she admits some of the physical demands are challenging as Anita grows.
Reflecting on the shock of Aless’s diagnosis, Ana revealed how hard it was to face his illness at such a young age. “We think life is eternal and nothing will happen to us, then suddenly, at 25, you hear you have aggressive cancer. It’s something no one expects,” she said.
Ana also confessed that raising Anita brings new fears shaped by the trauma of losing her son. Her decision to use surrogacy sparked significant public attention and debate, especially since surrogacy is illegal in Spain. Anita was born in the U.S., and Ana later legally adopted her as her daughter.
In previous interviews, Ana has spoken candidly about the grief that overwhelmed her after Aless’s death, describing feeling “dead for three years” until Anita’s birth brought her hope and renewed life. Marking Anita’s second birthday, Ana shared, “The pain will never leave. You don’t truly get over the death of your child; you learn to live alongside it.” She added, “But Anita brings fresh air to my life—it’s the light I needed.”
