How Ricky Nelson’s Intuition Saved His Twin Sons in a Fatal Plane Crash

Ricky Nelson was a beloved teen idol and one of the most visible musicians of his time. While many remember the mysterious circumstances around his tragic death, few know about the quick decision that saved the lives of his twin boys.

Born Eric Hilliard Nelson in 1940 in Teaneck, New Jersey, Ricky grew up in an entertainment family. His parents starred in the long-running sitcom “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” which included Ricky and his older brother David. While Ricky struggled with school, his music career took off early, earning him national fame and hits like “Garden Party” and “Travelin’ Man.”

In 1963, Ricky married Kristin Harmon; together they had four children, including twins Gunnar and Matthew. His career soared through the 1960s with hit tours and new singles.

Ricky had a deep fear of flying but continued to travel by plane to fulfill his career demands, even attending therapy to manage his anxiety.

On a New Year’s tour, Ricky planned to fly with his sons Matthew and Gunnar to Dallas for a show. But days before departure, a premonition led him to call and decide they should not travel together.

The plane Ricky would board, a DC-3 dubbed the “Flying Bus,” had reportedly experienced engine trouble just days earlier.

Ricky flew alone from Alabama. Unfortunately, as the plane approached Texas, the cabin filled with smoke, leading to a tragic fire that claimed Ricky’s life and several others. The pilot managed to land safely.

To this day, the cause of the fire remains unclear. Various rumors circulated, including allegations of drug use, which were denied by Ricky’s brother and manager. Ricky’s daughter Tracy believes a mechanical failure, possibly related to the plane’s gasoline heater, caused the accident.

Though heartbreaking, Ricky’s decision not to fly with his sons spared them from harm. Gunnar and Matthew went on to honor their father with successful music careers, calling their work a loving tribute to their dad, who was also their closest friend.

Ricky Nelson’s legacy lives on through his sons and the memories of the music and love he shared.
