Bullying touches many lives, whether as a victim, a witness, or sadly sometimes even as the person causing harm. Cassidy Trevan from Melbourne, Australia, experienced this harsh reality firsthand. She endured long-term emotional bullying and at times physical attacks. Hurtful names, online harassment, and even vandalism at her family home made life unbearable.
Eventually, the bullying forced Cassidy to stop attending school. Despite efforts to address the problem and several conversations with the bullies, nothing improved. After taking a term off, supported by professionals, Cassidy started attending school part-time. The girls who had once tormented her apologized, wanting to be friends and even invited her to a festival. Lonely for connection, Cassidy agreed.
What she didn’t know was that the invitation was a setup. The girls took her to a house where two older boys waited. They assaulted and raped the 13-year-old Cassidy. She bravely reported this to the police, but with little evidence, the case was dropped, and those involved went free.
Cassidy’s mother, Linda, moved her to a different school and later relocated, but the bullying continued. The torment followed Cassidy into public places and even extended to phone calls. Despite her mother’s efforts to protect her, Cassidy’s mental and emotional health deteriorated. Eventually, she could barely get out of bed.
Tragically, in December 2015, Cassidy ended her life. After her death, Linda found a letter Cassidy had written—a moving message to anyone affected by bullying. In it, Cassidy shared her experience, hoping to warn others and encourage them to fight back against abuse. She spoke of feeling isolated, overwhelmed by rumors, and ongoing harassment despite attempts to start anew.
Her words called on students, parents, and schools to pay attention and act to protect vulnerable kids. Cassidy wanted other young people to know they are not alone and urged victims to stand strong.
Her story spread widely, touching thousands and shining a devastating light on the impact of bullying and sexual violence. No one should ever feel that ending their life is the only escape.
Linda continues to grieve but hopes Cassidy’s message will inspire change. Through awareness and action, Cassidy’s legacy can save lives and remind us all to stand against bullying.
