Emma Stone has faced backlash from fans after she compared her upcoming movie Bugonia to the real-life case of Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. During a Q&A at the Telluride Film Festival, Stone revealed the eerie timing — the film was shot just before the CEO’s shooting incident near her New York home.
In Bugonia, Stone plays a ruthless CEO kidnapped by a conspiracy-obsessed employee who believes she is an alien bent on destroying humanity. Stone described the real-life murder as “terrifying” given the similarities to themes explored in the film, particularly critiques of healthcare systems.
However, some fans found her comments out of touch and criticized her for not addressing the political context or providing deeper commentary on such a serious case.
