Tom Hanks Snubbed at West Point Award Ceremony Amid Trump’s “Department of War” Move

Tom Hanks, the acclaimed actor and veterans supporter, was set to receive the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award at West Point on September 25, 2025. However, the West Point Association of Graduates abruptly canceled the award ceremony on the same day that former President Donald Trump rebranded the Department of Defense to the “Department of War.” The decision was announced by retired Army Colonel Mark Bieger, who stated the cancellation would allow the academy to focus on its core mission of preparing soldiers to fight and win as officers in the most lethal military force.

Hanks, 69, has been a longtime advocate for veterans and military causes, starring in iconic roles like Saving Private Ryan and producing WWII-themed miniseries. Despite this, the ceremony was canceled amid political controversies involving Trump’s administration, including changes to West Point’s educational environment. It remains unclear if Hanks will still receive the award.

Trump praised the cancellation, labeling Hanks as “woke” and “destructive” due to his politically critical remarks and portrayals of Trump supporters in media. The move has drawn attention to the growing culture clash surrounding military honors and politics.
