The rodeo community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of one of its brightest promising young stars. Ace Patton Ashford, just 18 years old and a rising figure in the rodeo circuit from Lott, Texas, passed away on August 12, 2024, following a devastating accident.
Reports indicate that on the morning of the accident, Ace was tending to a sick calf in an open field when his horse suddenly spooked. In the ensuing chaos, Ace’s leg became caught, and the horse dragged him a considerable distance before rescuers arrived.
Despite being airlifted to a hospital, Ace succumbed to his injuries. His family, including parents Troy Wayne and Jamie Dawn Ashford, expressed deep sorrow. They remembered Ace as a passionate rodeo roper recognized for his skill as a “Header” in Team Roping, an athlete who dedicated countless hours to training and was preparing to join Hill College’s rodeo team.
The Team Roping Journal celebrated him as “an old soul who departed far too soon,” while peers and mentors recalled his genuine character, kindness, and talent.
Ace is survived by his sister, brother, and girlfriend, Sydney Boatright. Tributes continue to pour in, reflecting the impact he made in his short life.
