Russia Fires Back at Trump’s ‘Paper Tiger’ Remarks Following UN Meeting With Zelenskyy

After a high-profile meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump delivered a scathing critique of Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine that drew sharp rebuke from Moscow. Trump’s comments, which disparaged Russian strategies as “aimless” and labeled Russia a “paper tiger,” sparked a fierce diplomatic backlash that underscored deep tensions still simmering over the ongoing conflict.

In a Truth Social post, Trump contrasted Russia’s war effort with Ukraine’s resilience, asserting that with European Union and NATO support, Ukraine is positioned to reclaim all its original territory. “Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a war that should have taken a real military power less than a week to win,” Trump wrote, emphasizing the economic troubles facing Russia and Putin alike.

Russia’s Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov strongly rejected the “paper tiger” insult, insisting Russia is a “bear” notable for its strength and resilience. Addressing Trump’s sharp critique, Peskov said, “There are no paper bears,” emphasizing Russia’s determination to continue its military campaign and protect its interests.

The Kremlin also dismissed Ukraine’s capacity to retake lost territory as “deeply mistaken,” reaffirming the conflict’s complexity. Moscow further accused Trump of ulterior motives, suggesting his stance serves business interests tied to American oil and gas sales, even as it grudgingly commended his calls for peace.

Trump’s turn towards supporting a robust Ukrainian defense and rebuking Russia marks a significant rhetorical shift from his earlier calls to consider territorial concessions to Russia. Analysts suggest that Trump’s new posture seeks to increase pressure on Moscow while signaling stronger support for Kyiv amid prolonged conflict.
