Off-Duty Deputy Saves Wife by Pushing Her Out of Way of Crash, Hospitalized with Life-Threatening Injuries

On the night of August 1, 2022, off-duty Anderson County reserve deputy Lucas Shoffner and his wife Nicole were by the roadside fixing a dirt bike chain when tragedy struck. A pickup truck driven by 31-year-old Raymond Surber veered out of control and barreled towards them.

Lucas acted heroically, shoving his wife out of harm’s way just in time but taking the brunt of the collision himself. Nicole survived with a fractured hip and road rash, but Lucas was left unconscious and severely injured.

Lucas was rushed to UT Medical Center’s Trauma Intensive Care Unit, diagnosed with a brain bleed, skull fractures, facial fractures, and a blood clot in his neck artery. He was placed in a medically induced coma, though he has since begun waking and showing promising signs of recovery.

Nicole supports him every step of the way, posting about his slow but steady progress on Instagram. Friends and community members have rallied to the couple’s aid, raising over $93,000 on GoFundMe to help with mounting medical bills.

Lucas recently reached a rehabilitation center in Atlanta, where small but significant milestones—like walking 200 steps—are celebrated as victories. His bravery and selflessness have inspired prayers and support worldwide.
