A lip reading expert has disclosed an intense and tense conversation between President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron during a famously long handshake at the Sharm El-Sheikh peace summit in Egypt on October 13, 2025. The summit marked a historic ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas after more than two years of conflict.
As Trump and Macron clasped hands for almost 30 seconds, their handshake resembled a political arm-wrestle, with an exchange that went beyond a simple greeting. According to lip reader Nicola Hickling, Trump asked Macron, “Nice to see you, so you agreed?” followed by “Are you being genuine?” Macron reportedly replied “Of course.”
The mood then turned darker as Trump said, “Okay, so now I want to know why. You hurt me. I already know,” tightening his grip. Macron responded with, “You will see what is about to happen,” signaling an ominous warning.
Trump asserted, “I only hurt those who hurt others,” pointing towards the cameras, to which Macron replied, “Let’s handle this behind closed doors,” before the two parted ways. This exchange followed earlier mockery by Macron over Trump’s geographical mix-ups.
Despite the tension, Trump celebrated the peace deal as a major achievement, emphasizing the focus on rebuilding Gaza rather than discussing statehood. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Trump as Israel’s “greatest friend,” praising the calm in the skies and silence of guns after years of war.
