From Sevnica to Fifth Avenue: The Little-Known Early Life of Melania Trump

Long before she became a First Lady known for her poise and privacy, Melania Trump’s life was a world away from the political spotlight. Born Melanija Knavs in the small Slovenian town of Sevnica, her journey to global recognition was paved with ambition, modeling contracts, and a few carefully guarded relationships that have only recently come to light. Her story is one of a determined woman who carved her own path from European design schools to the heart of New York City’s elite.

The men from her past paint a picture of her life before fame. Peter Butoln, who claimed to be her teenage boyfriend, described a youthful romance that ended when he left for military service. A spokesperson for Melania has since dismissed his claims, stating he was never an official boyfriend. Another figure, Jure Zorcic, recalls meeting her in 1991 in a scene he describes as being “like in a movie,” spotting her while on his motorcycle. He says they dated for several months before her career took her to Milan and Paris.

Her life changed irrevocably in 1998 at a Manhattan Fashion Week party. It was there she met Donald Trump, who arrived with another date but was immediately captivated by the Slovenian model. According to her best friend, Edit Molnar, Melania was initially “turned off” and refused to give Trump her number. Paolo Zampolli, the modeling agent who introduced them, has emphasized that Melania was a “homebody” who was “not a party girl” and had not dated anyone in New York before Donald.

Despite her initial reluctance, a relationship blossomed. Melania, in a 1999 interview, expressed strong confidence in Trump’s potential long before he entered politics, stating, “He would be a great president.” She married him in a lavish 2005 ceremony and welcomed their son, Barron, a year later. Her transition from a private model to a public figure was seamless, marked by her calm demeanor under intense scrutiny.
