Trump Threatens to Cut Federal Funds to NYC if Mamdani Wins Mayor Race

The New York City mayoral election has escalated into a national political battleground, with former President Donald Trump issuing a stark threat from his social media platform. Trump declared that he would severely cut federal funding to the city if the leading candidate, Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, is elected. The intervention has intensified an already contentious race and drawn a sharp response from the mayoral frontrunner.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump framed the election as a critical choice for the city’s future, urging voters to support independent candidate Andrew Cuomo. “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” Trump wrote. He dismissed a vote for Republican Curtis Sliwa as a vote that would only help Mamdani, whom he repeatedly labeled a “communist.”

The former president’s threat was explicit regarding the financial consequences of a Mamdani victory. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required,” he stated. Trump argued that with a “communist at the helm,” the city had “ZERO chance of success,” and he did not want to send “good money after bad.”

In response, Mamdani reframed Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo as a strategic alignment. During a press event, the mayoral candidate stated, “The MAGA movement’s embrace of Andrew Cuomo is reflective of Donald Trump’s understanding that this would be the best mayor for him.” He clarified, “Not the best mayor for New York City, not the best mayor for New Yorkers, but the best mayor for Donald Trump and his administration.” This exchange sets the stage for a potential high-stakes conflict between City Hall and a potential future Trump administration over the city’s governance and finances.
