Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration is set to make history, not only as the moment he becomes the 47th U.S. president but also for its unexpected twists. Weather concerns have led to significant last-minute changes, moving the swearing-in ceremony indoors to the Capitol Rotunda.
This will be the first indoor inauguration in 40 years, with the last occurring in 1985 when Ronald Reagan’s second-term ceremony faced similar weather challenges. Rain is expected during pre-inauguration events, and an Arctic blast will create dangerously low temperatures for Inauguration Day, prompting the switch.
On Truth Social, Trump addressed the change, explaining the decision was made with safety in mind. He expressed his desire to protect attendees from potential harm caused by the extreme weather, reassuring everyone that the ceremony would remain a special and historic experience. Trump also noted that indoor accommodations were being arranged for dignitaries, guests, and the TV audience.
Organizers are working to adjust plans for the thousands of attendees. Over 250,000 ticket holders were originally set to view the ceremony outdoors, with additional crowds expected along the parade route. With the outdoor parade now canceled, Capital One Arena will serve as the new hub for post-ceremony celebrations, where Trump plans to make an appearance after the swearing-in.
Even with the weather challenges, Sunday’s rally at Capital One Arena moved forward, drawing large crowds despite the cold and rain. Fans arrived early, some waiting in line for hours in temperatures just above freezing. The city even issued a hypothermia alert due to the conditions.
The changes have frustrated some attendees, including Lisa Bird from Arkansas, who was disappointed to learn about the cancellations after traveling to Washington, D.C. She expressed her dissatisfaction, especially since her tickets had guaranteed her a prime viewing spot.
For most Americans, however, the inauguration will be a televised event, easily accessible from the comfort of their homes. While the changes have disrupted tradition, the event remains a significant milestone and a moment of celebration for Trump’s supporters nationwide.
