Residents of an apartment building in Saint-Étienne were left stunned after making a heartbreaking discovery. In the early hours of Sunday, March 24, around 4:30 a.m., the sound of a baby crying echoed through the hallways, prompting neighbors to investigate. What they found was both shocking and distressing.
As they stepped out of their apartments, they noticed a trail of blood leading toward the basement. Following it, they reached the building’s trash room, where they stumbled upon a newborn baby in a small storage area. The infant had been abandoned, left all alone.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the residents immediately called emergency services. The cries and the presence of blood indicated that the baby had just been born. A team from the Loire Samu and firefighters from the Départemental Fire and Rescue Service of Loire (SDIS) responded swiftly.
The newborn was suffering from hypothermia and still had the umbilical cord attached. A doctor provided immediate medical care, ensuring the child’s safety. Fortunately, despite the harsh conditions, the infant was stable and taken to CHU of Saint-Étienne hospital for further treatment.
Authorities quickly launched an investigation, classifying the case as an attempted murder. Police emphasized that the baby’s survival was only possible due to the quick response of the residents and medical professionals.
Initial reports suggest that the mother is a 20-year-old woman who also resides in the building. It is believed that she had a repressed pregnancy, delivered the baby alone in her bathroom, and then abandoned the child.
Following the blood trail, police arrived at the young woman’s apartment, where she answered the door. She was transported to the city’s North Hospital for medical care. Investigators will question her once her condition allows.
The shocking discovery left the community shaken. The quick thinking of the neighbors played a crucial role in saving the newborn’s life.
