Sweeping Changes to US Citizenship and Passport Rules Under New Executive Orders

In a bold move on his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed executive orders that dramatically alter U.S. citizenship and passport policies. The most controversial measure ends birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented or temporarily visa-holding parents, a policy that has been a cornerstone of U.S. law for decades.

This change, which also bars these children from obtaining U.S. passports, has raised concerns about their legal status and the potential for statelessness. Alongside this, the administration introduced stricter immigration vetting processes and created Homeland Security Task Forces to enhance national security.

The orders also include a directive to eliminate the “X” gender marker from U.S. passports, reverting to a binary male-female system. This decision has been criticized by LGBTQ+ advocates as a step backward for inclusivity. As these policies take effect, their implications for immigration and civil rights are being closely watched.
