One ordinary workday, I was at a lunch meeting with colleagues at a restaurant. The conversation was light, and I was enjoying my meal when I noticed a familiar face across the room. It was my wife. This was confusing because, just twenty minutes earlier, she had texted me, saying she was at home, relaxing after a long morning. Her message had been casual, even including a check-in and a comment about unwinding.
Yet, there she was, sitting a few feet away, completely unaware of my presence. I was about to call out to her when I noticed something strange. She was deeply engrossed in her phone, a small smile on her face as she typed. The moment felt surreal, and I hesitated, watching her from a distance, trying to piece together what was happening.
Then, my phone buzzed. My heart raced as I pulled it out. It was a message from her. When I opened it, my stomach dropped. She had sent me a selfie—taken from what looked like our bedroom—wearing a face mask. The message read: “Can’t wait for you to come home! xoxo.”
I was overwhelmed with confusion and disbelief. If she was at home, who was the woman sitting in front of me? And if this was her, why was she pretending to be somewhere else? I didn’t wait. I stood up and walked straight to her table. The moment she looked up and saw me, her face turned pale. In that instant, I knew—whatever explanation she had, it wasn’t going to be good.
