The Day I Met My Daughter-in-Law (And Locked Her in the Basement)

Family gatherings will never be dull in our household, not with the story of how I first “welcomed” my daughter-in-law Danielle. As I watched her dance with my son at their wedding reception, I still couldn’t believe our rocky start had led to this beautiful moment.

When Xavier first brought Danielle home, one look at her face sent me into full detective mode. I was certain she was the scam artist who had broken my friend’s son’s heart. In what I still can’t believe was my reaction, I called the police and ushered Danielle into the basement “to talk privately,” locking the door behind us. The arriving officers were very confused to find a terrified young woman who was absolutely not any kind of criminal.

But here’s the miracle – Danielle forgave me. More than that, she found it hilarious. “At least I know you’ll protect Xavier as fiercely as I will,” she told me later. We bonded over our shared love of baking (though she’s much better at it), and she quickly became the daughter I never had.

Now when we tell the story, Danielle always adds dramatic flourishes about her “basement imprisonment,” much to everyone’s amusement. That moment of motherly overprotection, which could have been disastrous, somehow became the start of our beautiful family story.
