Skin Mite Invasion: Why UK Doctors Are Worried About Those Little Red Spots

Britain is facing a scabies surge, with cases skyrocketing by 100% in some areas. The skin infestation, caused by nearly invisible mites, creates clusters of red dots and relentless itching that worsens at night.

“The mites tunnel under the skin to lay eggs,” explains Dr. Sarah Jenkins of Manchester Royal Infirmary. “What starts as small bumps can turn into widespread rashes if untreated.” The current outbreak appears concentrated in northern England, with schools and university residences being hotspots due to close living quarters.

Treatment involves medicated creams and rigorous cleaning of clothing and bedding. “Many patients try to tough it out due to embarrassment,” says Dr. Jenkins. “But these mites won’t go away on their own, and the itching only gets worse.” Health officials stress that prompt medical attention can stop the spread and prevent painful secondary infections.
