Why Trump’s Dream of Hosting The Open at Turnberry Has Been Denied

Donald Trump’s vision of seeing The Open Championship played at his Turnberry resort has hit another roadblock. Despite his claims that the course is the best in Europe, tournament organizers have made it clear they won’t be visiting anytime soon.

The R&A, which governs The Open, has reportedly excluded Turnberry from its list of potential host venues due to concerns over protests and security complications stemming from Trump’s ownership. The former president has poured millions into renovating the Scottish course, even bringing in top golf architect Martin Grant Hawtree to elevate its design.

Trump has argued that the course’s quality should speak for itself, pointing to praise from industry experts like ex-R&A chief Peter Dawson. But the organization seems more focused on avoiding controversy than rewarding the resort’s undeniable prestige.

As long as Trump remains the owner, Turnberry’s chances of hosting golf’s most historic major appear slim—leaving the resort in limbo between excellence and exclusion.
