The Unwanted Roommate Who Almost Broke My Marriage

They say love means never having to say you’re sorry. I disagree. Love means not turning your wife into a hotel maid for your messy best friend. When Jake moved Alex into our guest room “temporarily,” I didn’t realize “temporary” meant until I lost my mind.

At first, I tried being the cool wife. Then I became the nagging wife. Then finally, the “if you won’t listen, you’ll learn” wife. The turning point? Discovering Alex had used my good bath towels to wipe up something suspicious and just left them in a heap. That’s when I became the wife who turned Jake’s man cave into a landfill of his friend’s filth.

For three glorious days, they pretended to be adults. Then the soda rings reappeared on our coffee table, and I reappeared at my best friend’s doorstep with an overnight bag. Nothing fixes marital problems faster than letting your husband experience life as the default cleaner.

When I returned, the house smelled like lemon cleaner instead of stale beer. Alex was finally leaving, and Jake was finally apologizing – really apologizing. Sometimes it takes walking out to make them see what they had. In our case, it was a wife who deserved way more respect.
