“Health Alert: COVID Numbers Climbing Again”

COVID’s not done with us yet. Recent data shows cases have more than doubled since the start of 2025, with hospitalizations following suit. While we’re far from the dark days of 2020, health officials urge continued caution as the virus demonstrates its staying power.

The numbers tell the story: England’s COVID positivity rate has jumped from 2.2% in January to 4.5% in April. This translates to roughly 1 in 330 people currently infected. Hospitals report a 7% increase in COVID patients, though numbers remain well below previous peaks.

“People think COVID is over, but viruses don’t work that way,” says Dr. Wylie. New variants and decreasing immunity create openings for the virus to keep circulating. Seasonal factors don’t help either, as people cluster indoors where viruses spread more easily.

Today’s COVID often looks different – more cold-like symptoms with fewer dramatic losses of taste or smell. The NHS’s spring booster campaign targets those most at risk, including seniors and immunocompromised individuals, offering protection through mid-June.
