Jennifer Aniston Reflects on the Evolution of Comedy and “Friends” Controversy

Jennifer Aniston has been reminiscing about her iconic sitcom “Friends” and how it has become a subject of controversy in today’s society. While promoting her new Netflix movie “Mystery 2,” co-starring Adam Sandler, Aniston shared her thoughts on the evolution of comedy and the challenges that come with it.

In an interview with AFP in Paris, Aniston acknowledged that comedy has undergone significant changes over the years. “Comedy has evolved, movies have evolved,” she said. “Now it’s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians.” Aniston emphasized that the beauty of comedy lies in its ability to poke fun at ourselves and life, but this has become increasingly difficult in today’s sensitive climate.

Aniston also touched on the cultural shift that has taken place since “Friends” first aired in 1994. She noted that a new generation of viewers has discovered the show, only to find some of its content offensive. “There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to ‘Friends’ episodes and find them offensive,” Aniston said. While acknowledging that some of the show’s content was never intentional, Aniston admitted that there were moments that they should have thought through more carefully.

The lack of diversity on “Friends” has long been a topic of discussion, and co-creator Marta Kauffman expressed her regret over the issue last year. “It’s not easy to admit and accept guilt,” Kauffman told the Los Angeles Times. “I regret not having more knowledge twenty-five years ago.” Aniston’s reflections on “Friends” and the evolution of comedy serve as a reminder that even the most beloved shows can be reevaluated in the context of changing societal values.
