Scientists are closer than ever to finding a cure for HIV thanks to CRISPR technology. Recent experiments at the University of Amsterdam successfully excised HIV DNA from infected cells, demonstrating the potential to completely eliminate the virus rather than just control it.
Unlike current antiretroviral drugs that require lifelong use, CRISPR works by permanently cutting out HIV’s genetic material from infected cells. Excision BioTherapeutics has taken this research further, conducting the first human trials of their EBT-101 therapy. While initial results showed the treatment to be safe, researchers caution that significant challenges remain before this approach can become a widely available cure.
