On August 7, an alarming incident unfolded aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship. While cruising between Miami and the company’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, a section of the popular “Frightening Bolt” waterslide suddenly cracked. This damage created a sharp hole in the acrylic tubing just as a passenger was sliding through, resulting in painful lacerations to his back and legs.
Witnesses described seeing water gush uncontrollably from the break and heard cries of alarm as passengers pleaded for the slide to be stopped. Thankfully, the injured man did not fall through the hole and was quickly given medical care. Royal Caribbean confirmed the guest is in stable condition.
The slide, located on the 16th floor and famous for its thrilling 46-foot drop, was immediately closed for the remainder of the voyage while an investigation is carried out. Passengers noted an increase in safety checks after the event. Despite the frightening experience, other pools and water attractions remained open.
The cruise line reassured guests that their safety is paramount and that such precautionary measures are standard when sailing through challenging routes. The slide’s failure is under review to determine whether it stemmed from a manufacturing defect, installation error, or impact. The incident has left some passengers shaken, with a few vowing to avoid waterslides in the future.
