Legal Battle Over Peanut the Squirrel’s Tragic End in New York

Peanut the Squirrel, a beloved social media star and companion to a raccoon named Fred, was seized and euthanized by New York state officials in October 2024, sparking a fierce controversy. Peanut’s owners, Mark Longo and Daniela Bittner, are now pursuing a $10 million lawsuit against the State of New York. They argue the killing of their pets was unnecessary and deeply traumatic, describing it as a “senseless act of violence” and accusing the authorities of government overreach.

The animals were taken after complaints about improper housing and the illegal keeping of wildlife. During the lengthy raid, Peanut bit a wildlife biologist through thick gloves, prompting rabies concerns. Both animals were euthanized and later tested negative for rabies. Despite this, the state never apologized nor returned the pets’ remains.

Longo and Bittner say the animals were “executed” rather than euthanized for safety reasons. They claim the raid involved excessive force and lasted five hours, with their home extensively searched. The lawsuit names multiple government agencies as defendants and highlights the emotional pain and financial losses suffered by the couple.

Peanut had amassed a large following online, featuring in monetized content and serving as an educational ambassador. This case has ignited debates about wildlife laws, pet ownership rights, and governmental authority. The owners hope their legal fight will bring justice for Peanut and Fred and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
