Asher Watkins, a wealthy Texas rancher and real estate broker, died tragically after being gored by a Cape buffalo during a hunting trip in South Africa. The 52-year-old was tracking a massive 1.3-ton buffalo in Limpopo Province on August 3 when the animal suddenly charged, fatally injuring him. The hunt was organized by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris, whose representatives described the attack as sudden and unprovoked. The buffalo itself escaped unharmed.
Watkins, known for his expertise in luxury ranch sales across Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, had a passion for hunting and was an active member of the Dallas Safari Club. His family—including his mother, stepfather, and brother—were at a nearby lodge during the incident. His ex-wife Courtney and teenage daughter Savannah have been informed of the heartbreaking loss.
The safari company expressed deep sorrow over Watkins’ death and pledged support to his grieving family. Cape buffaloes are considered extremely dangerous animals, often responsible for injuries and deaths among hunters due to their unpredictable behavior and powerful charges. This tragic event highlights the risks involved in big game hunting on the African continent.
