Frank Caprio, Beloved “Nicest Judge in the World,” Dies at 88 After Battle With Cancer

Frank Caprio, the gifted Rhode Island judge famed for his compassionate approach and kindness on Caught in Providence, has died peacefully at 88 after a tough fight against pancreatic cancer, according to his official Facebook page.

Throughout his career and life, Caprio embodied generosity, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people. His televised court sessions, which began airing in 2000 and earned several Emmy nods, often went viral for showing empathy rather than strict punishment.

Caprio’s family described him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, urging others to continue spreading kindness in his memory.

Born in Providence in 1936 to an Italian-American family, Caprio credited his upbringing for instilling empathy and a strong sense of community. Before joining the bench, he taught American government and earned his law degree ongoingly.

He served as a Providence Municipal Court judge from 1985 until 2023, building a reputation for fairness and warmth.

Known nationwide through his show, Caprio emphasized simple kindnesses like placing a hand on someone’s shoulder and expressing belief in them as life-changing.

When diagnosed with cancer in late 2023, Caprio asked for prayers and prepared to fight. His transparency won him love and support globally.
