Tragic Loss of 5-Year-Old Girl After Storm Drain Accident

On a Sunday evening, five-year-old Zaria Miller was playing outside with her brothers near Sarasota Christian School when a heartbreaking accident happened. As reported by deputies, strong water flow near a storm drain on Bahia Vista Street swept Zaria into the drainage system, carrying her approximately 100 yards before firefighters were able to rescue her.

The rescue was tense and dangerous, described by Sarasota County Fire Department Assistant Chief Tim Dorsey as a “low-frequency, high-risk event.” Rescuers quickly found Zaria, performed emergency care, and rushed her to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The sheriff’s office assigned a detective to the case, which remains under investigation. Neighbors, shocked by the events, shared how suddenly the situation unfolded with sounds of shouting and distress.

The community rallied around Zaria’s family, offering love and support. A GoFundMe page was created to assist them during this difficult time as Zaria remained in critical condition.

Tragically, after almost a week in hospital, Zaria’s family shared the devastating news that she had passed away peacefully. They expressed their deep gratitude for the outpouring of care from friends, neighbors, and supporters.

This heartbreaking incident reminds us of both the unpredictable dangers around us and the strength found in community support at times of loss.
