Abby and Erin Delaney’s story is one of courage, hope, and resilience. These twin sisters were born in 2016, joined at the head in a rare condition called craniopagus, which affects only about two percent of conjoined twins. Their parents, Heather and Riley Delaney, were overwhelmed when doctors told them the survival odds were slim, between five and twenty-five percent. Yet, with love and faith, they prepared to welcome their daughters, born nearly 10 weeks premature in Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital.
The road ahead was challenging. For over a year, Abby and Erin lived in the hospital’s care while medical teams planned and executed a groundbreaking surgery. In June 2017, a skilled team of more than 30 doctors and specialists conducted an 11-hour operation to separate the girls safely. Surgeons used innovative techniques to reconstruct their shared skulls and carefully separate vital blood vessels. It was a groundbreaking procedure that drew attention in the medical community.
After surgery, the twins faced months of recovery and therapy. Abby lost a significant amount of blood during the operation and both required multiple therapies to regain strength and skills. Despite the difficulties, they continued to make inspiring progress. Their parents documented every step, sharing updates online to raise awareness. In 2021, Abby and Erin underwent further skull reconstruction surgeries, continuing their journey towards normal childhoods.
