77-Year-Old Woman Tragically K-illed by Great White Shark in Cape Town

Tyna Webb, a 77-year-old grandmother and experienced swimmer, was attacked by a massive great white shark off Fish Hoek beach near Cape Town in November 2004. Known for her dedication, she had swum daily at this spot for 17 years. On that fateful morning, the shark circled Webb before lunging at her in full view of shocked beachgoers. Despite desperate warnings from onlookers, Webb was struck multiple times and dragged underwater.

All that remained was her bright red bathing cap. Rescuers searched extensively but never recovered her body. Witnesses described the shark as “bigger than a helicopter,” likely drawn by fish discarded by local fishermen causing a feeding frenzy. Webb’s final moments were reportedly faced with dignity, embodying her deep respect and connection with the ocean where she spent much of her life. A memorial and remembrance service honored her life, describing her as kind, intelligent, and independent, with a special place in the community.
