A concerning health warning is circulating, focusing on a condition with an unusual name: popcorn lung. Medically known as bronchiolitis obliterans, this is a serious and irreversible lung disease that is increasingly linked to modern habits, particularly among young adults. Understanding what it is and how it’s caused is the first step in protecting your long-term respiratory health.

The term “popcorn lung” originated over two decades ago when workers at a microwave popcorn factory began developing severe lung problems. The culprit was identified as diacetyl, a chemical used to create a buttery flavor. When inhaled over time, this substance caused inflammation and permanent scarring in the tiniest airways of the lungs, known as the bronchioles. The damage is so severe that it obstructs airflow, and once it occurs, it cannot be reversed.

The reason this historical incident is relevant today is that diacetyl was once commonly used in flavored e-cigarettes and vapes. When aerosolized and inhaled, it acts as a toxic inhalant, posing the same risk to vapers as it did to the factory workers. While diacetyl is now officially banned in e-cigarettes in the EU and UK, it can still be found in illegal products and remains in use in other jurisdictions, including some products in the US.

The most alarming aspect of popcorn lung is that there is no cure. Treatment focuses solely on managing symptoms, which can include a persistent dry cough and shortness of breath, especially during physical activity. In extreme cases, the damage can be so extensive that a lung transplant becomes the only option. This makes prevention the single most important defense against the disease.
For young people, the rise in vaping is a significant concern. Health organizations note that e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among youth. While the full long-term consequences of vaping are still being studied, the potential link to irreversible conditions like popcorn lung presents a clear and present danger. The best way to safeguard your lungs is to avoid inhaling unknown chemicals altogether, as the price of the habit could be the permanent health of your airways.
