As a newlywed, I was excited to share a part of my family’s tradition with my husband’s family. Last weekend, I decided to bring a dish that my late mom used to make for special occasions to my in-laws’ family dinner. I thought it would be a nice way to honor her memory and share a piece of myself with my new family.
However, things didn’t go as planned. As soon as I set the dish on the table, my mother-in-law gave me a harsh look and said, “Get your mother’s food out of my house!” I was taken aback by her reaction and felt humiliated in front of everyone.
I couldn’t hold back my tears, and I quickly left the table and waited for my husband in the car. I was hurt and confused by my mother-in-law’s behavior, and I didn’t know how to process my emotions.
The ride home was silent, and I couldn’t wait to talk to my husband about what had happened. But instead of comforting me, he suddenly burst out laughing and said, “Did you hear the joke my cousin made during dinner? He’s hilarious; he should be a comedian.” I was shocked and felt like he wasn’t taking my feelings seriously.
