Facing the threat of tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken significant action to address fentanyl trafficking. Trudeau appointed Kevin Brosseau as Canada’s fentanyl czar and unveiled a comprehensive border security plan to prevent illegal drugs from crossing into the U.S.
Brosseau, a respected law enforcement veteran, will oversee efforts to dismantle fentanyl networks and enhance collaboration with U.S. authorities. Trudeau highlighted Brosseau’s expertise in tackling organized crime and national security threats, expressing confidence in his ability to lead this critical initiative.
The $1.3 billion border security plan includes deploying advanced surveillance equipment, such as drones and mobile towers, and increasing the presence of law enforcement personnel. Canada has also designated organized crime cartels as terrorist entities, providing police with greater tools to combat drug trafficking.
Trudeau emphasized that while fentanyl trafficking from Canada is a small fraction of the overall problem, it must be addressed aggressively. He pledged to eliminate fentanyl production and hold traffickers accountable, aiming to satisfy Trump’s demands and prevent the imposition of tariffs that could harm both countries’ economies.
