Working with animals is always unpredictable, and even the most experienced handlers can face unexpected challenges. This was evident during a recent appearance by the Budweiser Clydesdales at the San Antonio Rodeo and Stock Show, where a sudden tangle left the audience on edge.
The Budweiser Clydesdales are among the most recognizable animal teams in the world, often compared to Santa’s reindeer for their iconic status. They are a regular feature at events, especially those involving other animals. However, during their presentation at the rodeo, things took an unexpected turn.
As the team was introduced to the crowd, two of the lead horses became visibly agitated. They began to turn, causing the line to fold in on itself. The handlers, caught off guard by the sudden movement, realized too late what was happening. The two horses tried to push their way between the second and third horses in the line, resulting in a chaotic tangle of straps and yokes.
With each Clydesdale weighing between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds, the situation quickly escalated as the horses tumbled on top of each other. Handlers rushed to the scene to untangle the mess and prevent the rest of the team from panicking. While there was no full-blown stampede, the incident was enough to create a tense atmosphere among the spectators.
The announcer reassured the crowd, emphasizing that such incidents, while unexpected, are not entirely uncommon when working with animals. “When you’re working with animals, you never know what might happen in the livestock or rodeo industries,” the announcer said. “Everyone is thinking positive thoughts.”
The handlers worked quickly to unstrap the horses, carefully freeing them one by one. Meanwhile, other team members focused on calming the downed horse. To give the fallen horse space to recover, the wagon and the remaining pairs were moved to the side. After several tense moments, the horse finally got back on its feet, prompting cheers and applause from the relieved audience.
Thankfully, no horses were injured in the incident. Anheuser-Busch, the company that owns the Budweiser Clydesdales, released a statement confirming the safety of the animals. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our beloved Clydesdales,” the statement read. “We work with an equine medical specialist and a highly skilled team of professional caregivers to ensure our animals receive the best possible care.”
The Budweiser Clydesdales have been a symbol of tradition and excellence since their debut in April 1933, celebrating the end of Prohibition. Today, three teams travel across the United States, continuing to captivate audiences with their grandeur.
