It’s a tiny detail most of us overlook, but men’s and women’s shirts button on opposite sides—and the reasons behind it are a fascinating glimpse into history. While today’s clothing is increasingly unisex, this design quirk remains a stubborn relic of the past.
For men, buttons sit on the right; for women, they’re on the left. One explanation dates back to aristocratic Europe, where wealthy women were dressed by maids. Left-side buttons made it easier for right-handed servants to fasten their mistresses’ garments. Men, who dressed themselves, had buttons positioned for their own convenience.
Others tie the difference to combat. Men’s clothing was designed for quick access to weapons, with right-side buttons allowing them to unbutton coats swiftly while drawing a sword or pistol. Women’s fashion, free from such practical concerns, maintained the left-side tradition.
