After 80 Years in Chains, Elephant Somboon Finally Finds Peace

Elephants are majestic creatures meant to roam freely, not live in captivity and chains. Sadly, many like Grandma Somboon have endured years of cruel treatment. Taken from the wild as a baby, Somboon spent over 80 years forced into hard labor in logging and tourism, separated from her family and made to perform or give rides to tourists instead of living freely.

The demand from visitors perpetuates this cycle of suffering, but thankfully change is happening. When Thailand’s Save Elephant Foundation learned of Somboon’s dire condition, they stepped in. In January, at 87 years old, she was rescued and brought to Elephant Nature Park sanctuary, her true home at last.

Somboon arrived in poor health—malnourished, dehydrated, missing a tooth, and with faded eyes. Her skin showed signs of prolonged neglect. Despite this, she surprised her rescuers by immediately resting deeply, something many elephants traumatized by years of shackling rarely do. Having spent her life chained and standing on hard ground, she finally laid down for the first time in decades, finding relief and peace.

Though it took effort to rise from her long sleep, Somboon is slowly adjusting and improving under careful care. At the sanctuary, she enjoys soft sand beds, regular food and water, and a respectful, gentle environment where she can heal. While she still needs support, her progress is steady and inspiring.

Somboon’s story shows the incredible resilience of elephants. After a lifetime of hardship, she now knows freedom and kindness. Her journey reminds us all how important it is to protect these beautiful animals and give them the lives they deserve.
