Plastic Surgeon Warns About Long-Term Damage Fillers Can Cause

Dermal fillers have become hugely popular as a quick way to smooth wrinkles, add volume, and refresh your face without surgery. Many believe they are temporary and safe, but Dr. Kami Parsa, a Beverly Hills reconstructive surgeon, cautions that fillers can cause lasting problems that people often don’t expect.

In 2024, Dr. Parsa shared MRI scans revealing how hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers—one of the most common types—can remain under the skin for years after injection. In a patient who had over 12 syringes of HA filler across six years, the material actually grew in volume, increasing by more than double the original amount injected. This is because HA attracts water, causing tissues to expand over time.

Dr. Parsa explains that overusing fillers can lead to permanent changes like “pillow face,” where the face looks unnaturally swollen and stretched. Instead of restoring youth, excessive filler use sometimes accelerates aging or distorts natural facial features. He urges users to remember that “you cannot fill your face to youth.”

The problems develop gradually through repeated injections that layer filler too thickly, overcorrection in some areas, and the weight of the filler stretching the skin. Some people may have little lumps or chronic swelling that require further medical procedures to fix.

Social media reactions to Dr. Parsa’s warnings have been strong, with many surprised that fillers might not fully dissolve and others sharing concerns about injections being like placing “poison” in the face. His message is clear—less is more when it comes to fillers to avoid permanent damage and unnatural looks.
