Federal health officials are warning the public about a growing salmonella outbreak across multiple states, linked to recalled eggs. So far, 95 illnesses have been confirmed, but health experts believe the actual number may be higher due to delays in symptom onset and reporting. The contaminated eggs come from Country Eggs, LLC, and were sold under various brand names, including Large Brown Cage Free Sunshine Yolks, Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho, and Nijiya Markets. This repackaging under different labels makes it harder for consumers to identify unsafe eggs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have urged people to carefully check any eggs they have at home and to discard or return any affected cartons. Cleaning all surfaces and utensils that may have touched the eggs is crucial to prevent further spread of salmonella bacteria. Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and nausea, with symptoms appearing within hours to days after exposure.
While most healthy adults recover without treatment, vulnerable people such as young children, elderly, or those with weak immune systems may face serious complications, including hospitalization. Officials remind consumers to cook eggs thoroughly, avoid raw egg dishes like homemade mayonnaise or cookie dough, and maintain hygiene when handling eggs. Keeping eggs refrigerated until use is also vital.
The investigation to trace all affected products and illnesses is ongoing. Health agencies emphasize the importance of staying informed and acting quickly to protect families from this serious foodborne threat.
