Mikayla Raines, a beloved wildlife activist and YouTube star, tragically took her own life at just 29 years old. She founded the Save A Fox rescue organization, which became the largest fox rescue in the U.S. with locations in Minnesota and Florida. Her husband, Ethan Raines, announced the heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram video, revealing she passed away days earlier.
Mikayla dedicated her life to rescuing and rehabilitating hundreds of exotic animals, including foxes, lemurs, and raccoons, many of which were victims of cruel fur farms. She started volunteering with animals at age 15 and launched her rescue organization in 2017, quickly amassing millions of followers on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
Known for her selflessness and passion, Mikayla battled mental health challenges including autism, borderline personality disorder, and depression. Despite years of therapy, medication, and support, a relentless campaign of online bullying deeply affected her, especially hurtful because it came from former friends within the animal care community.
Even a day before her death, Mikayla posted joyfully with a lemur on Instagram. Her husband described how the cruelty of online harassment and false rumors led to her feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. Though he performed CPR upon finding her unresponsive, it was too late to save her.
Ethan Raines vowed to continue Mikayla’s mission in her honor, asking for community support. They leave behind a heartbroken daughter, Freya, who is coping with her loss.
Animal rescue groups nationwide mourn Mikayla’s passing and praise her incredible impact. Her story highlights the devastating effects of online bullying and the urgent need for mental health awareness and compassion.
