Zaelynn Hirschy, a two-year-old from Berne, Indiana, tragically died after being left overnight in a closet that reached a deadly temperature of 109 degrees. Police responded to a death investigation at the family apartment in November 2024. Upon entering the home, officers noted filthy living conditions including cockroach infestation and moldy food.
Investigators discovered Zaelynn asleep on a soiled mattress in a crib inside a small closet heated by a space heater left on high, creating fatal heat conditions. Her body was discolored, and an autopsy confirmed hyperthermia as the cause of death.
Her parents, Sintia Perez, 21, and Jace Hirschy, 23, reportedly put Zaelynn to bed at 7 p.m. but did not check on her until hours later when it was too late. The couple has been charged with felony neglect resulting in death as well as neglect of other dependent children who were found in poor health.
Zaelynn was described as a joyful child with bright blue eyes who brought happiness to her family. This heartbreaking case serves as a grim reminder of child safety and the importance of protection.
