However, Rowling responded with a blistering post on social media, dismissing Watson as “ignorant” and accusing her of exacerbating the hostility faced by Rowling during peak threats over her outspoken views. Rowling criticized Watson and Daniel Radcliffe for acting as de facto spokespeople for the Harry Potter universe and suggested their support for transgender activism damaged women’s rights—a cause Rowling feels profoundly about due to her own life experiences.
Rowling also recounted a painful moment during which Watson sent a brief condolence note at a time when she was facing death and assault threats, which Rowling felt was insufficient after Watson had “poured petrol on the flames” publicly.
