Kidney cancer is one of the most common cancers in the US, but many people don’t realize they have it until it’s advanced. Nicknamed the “silent disease,” four out of five kidney cancer cases are found accidentally during tests for other health issues. Kidney Cancer UK warns that over half of these cases are diagnosed this way.
Hazel Jackson, lead nurse at Kidney Cancer UK, explains that early symptoms are often vague and easy to overlook. These include back pain, chronic tiredness, and recurring urinary tract infections. The biggest warning sign is blood in the urine, which can range from bright red to just a faint pink tint or tiny specks.
Jackson stresses that even a small amount of blood in urine should never be ignored. It might indicate harmless problems like stones or infection, but it could also be an early sign of cancer. Other symptoms include dull pain in the side or back, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, fever, night sweats, and excessive sweating.
Because the symptoms can be so subtle, Jackson advises everyone to trust their instincts and get checked by a doctor if they notice any unusual changes. Early diagnosis greatly improves treatment outcomes, so don’t delay seeing a healthcare professional.
