Heather Cornelius bravely tells the world how her ex-husband, after nearly a decade of seemingly normal marriage, poured caustic chemicals into her eyes, leaving her temporarily blind and suffering severe injuries. Initially, Heather believed she was in a loving relationship, despite friends warning her otherwise. But after gaining independence by joining the Coast Guard, her husband grew insecure and abusive.
The nightmare escalated in November 2022 when, following a confrontation, Heather’s husband attacked her with chemicals, attempting to silence her. Heather endured unimaginable pain as her eyelids were “melted off” and required multiple surgeries. She was airlifted to a trauma center and placed in the ICU burn unit.
Despite the physical devastation, Heather’s mental scars run deepest. Fearing for the safety of her children, she initially stayed silent. Over time, with support and courage, she escaped the abusive relationship and is now an advocate for domestic violence survivors.
