A Young Neighbor’s Compassion: Welcoming an Elderly Friend Into His Home

In 2013, Chris Salvatore, a 31-year-old actor, moved into an apartment suite across the hall from Norma Cook, an 85-year-old woman, and her cat, Hermes. What started as friendly greetings quickly blossomed into a deep friendship as they spent time chatting and sharing moments together. When Norma’s health declined dramatically as she neared 89, Chris made an extraordinary decision—he invited her to move into his home.

Norma had been hospitalized and was informed that to return home, she needed constant care. With no children or close family nearby, she faced the difficult prospect of moving into a care facility, something Chris couldn’t accept for someone he cared about deeply. Determined to help, he even set up a GoFundMe to cover the costs of care.

Their life together was filled with companionship. Norma, who affectionately called Chris the grandson she never had, enjoyed watching the news, sharing drinks, and talking late into the evening. Their bond grew stronger each day, providing comfort through Norma’s final chapter.

Sadly, Norma passed away in 2017, but Chris’s kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on all who heard their story. It’s a heartwarming example of how neighbors can become family.
