Jim Carrey, the renowned actor known for his versatility in films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, had announced his retirement from acting in 2022. However, it seems that Carrey has had a change of heart, and the reason behind his decision to return to acting is quite straightforward – he needs the money.
In an interview, Carrey revealed that he had initially planned to retire after completing the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Despite being approached with lucrative offers, including a potential role in a Dolly Parton biopic, Carrey had insisted that he was done with acting. He even jokingly stated that the only way he would return to acting was if angels delivered a script written in golden ink.
Fast-forward to the present, and Carrey is set to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. When asked about his earlier statements regarding retirement, Carrey admitted that he might have been exaggerating. He jokingly attributed his return to acting to the fact that he gets to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. More candidly, he confessed that he needs the money, having accumulated a significant amount of expenses.
Carrey’s return to acting has been met with excitement from fans, who are eagerly anticipating the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The movie, which also stars Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba, is set to hit theaters in the US on December 20, 2024.
