Senior Showering: How Often Is Too Often?

That refreshing daily shower might not be the best choice after 65. As skin matures, it needs different care – and that includes adjusting how often we wash.

Aging skin produces less oil and becomes more fragile. Daily showers can leave it dry and irritated. Most dermatologists suggest seniors shower two to three times weekly, with sponge baths in between. When you do shower, keep it short (under 5 minutes) and use lukewarm water with mild, moisturizing products.

The key is focusing on cleanliness without over-drying. Pay special attention to areas that need it most, like underarms and private parts. After bathing, gently pat dry and apply cream while skin is still damp to lock in moisture.

This gentler approach helps maintain both hygiene and skin health as we age.
