The Dark Side of Air Fryers: Doctor Explains Why She Stopped Using Hers

Air fryers are praised for their convenience and ability to crisp food without excess oil. But according to one doctor, they may come with serious health risks.

Dr. Poonam Desai, a specialist in longevity, recently shared why she decided to throw away her air fryer. She pointed to acrylamide, a chemical that forms when foods like potatoes or bread are cooked at high heat. While studies show acrylamide causes cancer in animals, its effects on humans remain unclear—but the potential risk was enough for her to stop using the appliance.

Another issue? Non-stick coatings in many air fryers contain PFAS, chemicals that linger in the body and have been linked to health problems. The American Cancer Society notes that these substances don’t break down easily, raising concerns about long-term exposure.

To reduce risks, experts stress proper cleaning. Dr. Richard Anderson suggests wiping down the air fryer after each use and doing a deep clean monthly. Avoid dishwashers, which can strip the non-stick coating, and instead soak stubborn grease with a dishwasher tablet overnight.

While air fryers aren’t being banned anytime soon, this warning highlights the importance of using them wisely—and keeping them clean.
