A collection of rare photographs has emerged showing Hachiko in his years-long vigil at Shibuya Station, providing new visual evidence of the Akita’s extraordinary devotion. The images, preserved for decades before coming to light, capture the heartbreaking daily routine of Japan’s most famous loyal companion.
The story began when Professor Ueno adopted the Akita puppy in 1924. Their bond was immediate and profound, with Hachiko accompanying his owner to the train station each morning and returning each evening to walk him home. This touching ritual continued until May 1925, when the professor unexpectedly passed away at work.
The photos show Hachiko maintaining his watch at the station, his posture alert with expectation as trains arrived and departed. Station staff and commuters eventually adopted the waiting dog, bringing him food and water as he continued his futile vigil for nearly ten years.
