In a heart-stopping moment on a hot July day in Keene, New Hampshire, police officer Jason Short raced to save what he believed was a baby trapped inside a scorching car. A 911 call alerted authorities about an infant left unattended in a vehicle at a grocery store parking lot.
Upon arrival, Lt. Short spotted what appeared to be a baby wrapped in a blanket, its tiny feet visible through the car window. Without hesitation, he smashed the window to rescue the child. However, when the officer began administering CPR and attempted to check the airway, he was met with unexpected resistance—it was then he realized the “baby” was actually a hyper-realistic reborn doll.
The doll’s owner later explained that these lifelike dolls help her cope with the loss of her son. Though embarrassed by the incident, Officer Short expressed he would never hesitate to break a window to save a child, saying, “I would always assume it’s a child.”
